What is depression?
Depression is not who you are. It may be a large part of your life right now, and often when you are experiencing depression it may feel like there is no escape. However, there are many tried and true methods to treat depression. The way we diagnose depression is to look at your overall mood and energy levels, explore the loss of pleasure in activities that you previously enjoyed, and any feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, hopelessness. In addition to these symptoms, we look at how depression is physically affecting your body and mind. Changes in weight or appetite, changes in sleep patterns, slowed thoughts and body movements, becoming easily fatigued, and difficulty concentrating are all common symptoms.
Depression is not who you are!
People have been experiencing depression throughout recorded history, and methods for fighting depression have been developed for almost as long. There are many well-researched methods of fighting depression, and our goal is to guide you to the treatment that is right for you. Medication is one step of treatment which makes it easier to take the next steps. Changes in diet and activity levels are often needed. Discussing and learning about negative thinking, emotions, and behavioral patterns will not only guide you out of depression but often prevent it from returning in the future.
What to expect
Treatment for depression is a process. As symptoms improve, it is often family, good friends, or colleagues that will notice before you do. This is because the low moods and the learned negative thinking are often the last parts of depression to improve. Often people will find that their physical symptoms begin improving quickly, however. Improved sleep and appetite, greater ability to focus and concentrate, higher energy levels, and greater motivation are often the early results of a successful treatment plan. Based on ongoing evaluation of your symptoms and response to treatment, your treatment plan may be updated on an ongoing basis.
